working big

If you've seen my website and been following my blog, you've probably noticed how much I love to draw hands. I just think they're beautiful and so full of subtle communication. They're also difficult to draw, so a major reason I've been doing it is for practice.

Some of the best advice I was ever given by a teacher was to stop painting and start drawing. He didn't mean that painting was bad. he meant that I was always so excited to paint that I wasn't preparing a strong foundation for my pieces. He assured me that after I focused further on drawing, if I really loved painting it would find its way back into my work.

Working abstractly with traditional materials is one of the most freeing activities in the world.

Getting Ahead

Here is the finished illustration for "Getting Ahead."

I've found that a lot of my work lately has been based around psychological themes.
I don't know exactly why I've moved this direction, but I've found that I love to use the figure to express these kinds of experiences. I've been thinking a lot about what people believe makes them successful. I go through phases where the expectations I place on myself cause me to sacrifice the things in my life that bring me peace.

long-term work

I met some great people over my four years in
Portland. This is a painting I've been working
on slowly for quite a long time. It's called
"Over-the-Hill Gang" and so far I've used torn
paper, charcoal and gouache. Still much work
to be done. I have two more ladies still to
add, but I'm in no hurry. This kind of work is
relaxation only painting.

word and image

Rough value comp for a new drawing I'm working on right now,
based on a poem I've been writing, entitled "Getting Ahead."
I will post the finished piece and written work soon!
